Interpreting Services

Interpreting is the oral translation of spoken text. Various types of interpreting services are available; Wilkens c.s.  can select the right interpreter for your particular project. The different types of interpreting services include:

Liaison (ad hoc) Interpreting

This is used in conversation where speech is translated sentence for sentence from the language of party A into the language of party B and vice versa. This type of interpreting is mainly used in negotiations, police interviews, business visits etc.

Notary Interpreting

When a deed is being drawn up in the Dutch language, Article 42 of the Notaries Act stipulates that if persons are involved who do not have a sufficient understanding of the Dutch language, a sworn translator-interpreter must be present to interpret the contents of the deed. This Article often leads to confusion as there is no such thing as a sworn interpreter in the Netherlands. However, there are sworn translators who also perform interpreting work.

Simultaneous Interpreting

The interpreter translates while the speaker continues speaking. During conferences the interpreter may sit in a specially equipped cabin using two interpreters per language combination. The translation is conveyed simultaneously to the listeners via a headset. For a small audience the whisper technique may be used; for up to three people no equipment is necessary, for more than three people a mobile unit with microphone and earphones is used. Wilkens c.s. can supply the necessary equipment.

Consecutive Interpreting

During consecutive interpreting, the interpreter makes notes while the speaker is speaking, and reads out their translation of the notes once the speaker has finished. This type of interpreting is particularly suitable for committee meetings or presentations in smaller settings.
